In 1987, Special Event Production, Inc. began by providing electronic scoreboards for the Camel GT auto racing and Camel Pro motorcycle racing programs as well as a few Winston Cup Series road races and Winston rodeo events. Also in 1987, SEP assisted in the design of a new scoreboard system for Vantage Golf. The ten-board system included a state of the art control room in the trailer, a portable structure system designed for golf courses nationwide and the first two-way data radio system ever to be used in electronic golf scoring. The scores were relayed to the truck using hand held terminals at each green and the truck sent the data to the scoreboards. The scoreboards were powered by golf cart and had wind detection systems to automatically lower the board if the wind gusted over 45 mph. Since 1987, the scoring systems have changed with improving technology, but SEP still delivers the same quality service to over 100 PGA TOUR, Champions Tour, and Nationwide Tour tournaments each year.
In 1999, SEP began a relationship with American Le Mans Series Racing. In the beginning, reflective disc scoreboards displayed sponsor logos, fan information, and a scoring and timing interface. In 2003, SEP designed an LED video screen system for use on the ALMS. The system consists of five Daktronics ProStar LED video screens with steel support structures, diesel generators for each screen, utility cart, and a state of the art control room in the trailer. Each year this rig travels with the ALMS to all of their races keeping their fans completely involved in the race no matter where they are on the track.
In 2003, SEP also purchased another Daktronics ProStar LED video screen. This wall measures 17 feet high by 23 feet wide and is mounted on a 48 foot flatbed trailer. The unit has it's own whisperwatt generator for power and may be lifted up over 15 feet and is capable of 360 degree rotation. The control room houses the computer systems necessary to display graphics, real time scoring data, pre-programmed video segments, and live video feeds. With the addition of this screen, SEP truly became a special event supplier, adding festivals, concerts and other outdoor events to their schedule.
Today SEP provides service to almost 200 events each year. With choices ranging from simple reflective disc scoreboards to nine stunning full color video screens, and services from scoring systems to installation and maintenance of scoreboards and LED signs, SEP has something to offer any special event no matter what size or location.
